Action 6: Assessment of environmental pollution levels via compilation of a monitoring network in the area for the identification of sampling sites on the basis of hydrological, hydrogeological and morphological characteristics of the area Action 6 completed the monitoring network begun as part of Action 2, based on the previous Action’s outcomes and the pilot area’s particular characteristics. The selection of the network’s monitoring points for the collection of environmental samples was determined by the hydrological, hydrogeological and morphological characteristics of the pilot area, as well as the type of crops and the willingness of the farmers to have their fields included in the monitoring network. The environmental samples were (and continue to be) analyzed for levels of pesticides, nitrates and heavy metals. The monitoring results are then compared to the modelled estimates derived from the environmental scenario proposed by the FOCUS group for the region of Viotikos Basin. Furthermore, direct toxicity assessments of the samples are performed on the bacterium Vibrio fischeri, the cladoceran Daphnia magna, the micro-algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and the earthworm Eisenia foetida.
